LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team kept its high-scoring ways going on Saturday with another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles, two days after scoring 101 points in a win over Stanislaus State, raced to a 96-75 win over UC Merced in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-5, 5-3 CCAA) pulled into a tie for fourth place with Cal State San Bernardino with the victory.
Cal State LA, much like it did on Thursday, had a big second half to account for the scoring frenzy. The Golden Eagles, after being held to a halftime tie at 36-36 by the Bobcats, outscored their opponents, 60-39, in the final two quarters.
Nevaeh Asiasi had high-scoring honors once again, following up her career-high 27 points on Thursday with 25 points, five rebounds and seven assists on Saturday. She led five Golden Eagles in double figures.
Kyara Walter was 4-of-5 from 3-point range and had a career-high 16 points, while
Sofia Fidelus had 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists and
Mariah Blake had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Mariah Flores had an outstanding game for UC Merced (4-11, 1-7 CCAA), scoring 23 points and adding six rebounds. Nicole Lukito had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Ronyae Jackson had an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Golden Eagles, while
Amaya Fuentes had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Cal State LA shot 50.6 percent for the game and was 10-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 60 percent in the second half (26-of-43). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. UC Merced shot 41.1 percent (30-of-73) and was 6-of-25 from 3-point range. The Bobcats were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 49-37 rebounding edge and committed 18 turnovers to 17 for UC Merced.
UC Merced led by as many as seven points in the first half and had a 30-24 lead before a layup by Walter, a jumper by Fidelus, as 3-pointer by Walter and a layup by Asiasi accounted for a 9-0 run and a 33-30 Cal State LA lead. A 3-pointer by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 36-33 lead, but a 3-pointer by Sarina Nagra tied it at halftime, 36-36.
Cal State LA opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Jackson and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles opened up a 17-point lead after a 3-pointer by
Gabriella Rones, two layups by Asiasi and two free throws by Asiasi made up a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 69-52. A late layup by Lukito made it 69-54 after three quarters.
Cal State LA took a 20-point lead at 77-57 after back-to-back baskets by Blake and took the biggest lead of the game at 88-66 on a 3-pointer by Walter with 2:31 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action with road game at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday.
