Six Golden Eagles Earn WGCA Academic Honors

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida -- A program-record six members of Cal State LA's women's golf team were part of the 2024-25 Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team announced by the organization on Monday.

Sarah Amaya, Daniela Andrade, Joshlyn Ayala, Brenna Ozel, Harley Richardson, and Morgan Sjoerdsma were part of a group of 1,499 collegiate golfers from 403 programs who were recognized for their academic work. All members of the WGCA All-American Scholar Team must have a 3.50 grade point average or better and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's competitions during the season. Amaya, Andrade, Ayala, Richardson and Sjoerdsma all earned WGCA All-American Scholar honors last season for Cal State LA and were joined by Ozel, who also earned those honors last year while competing at Sonoma State.

The six exceeds the previous program record of five set in 2022-23 and equaled in 2023-24.

Amaya, a sophomore majoring in Kinesiology, had her best season yet with the Golden Eagles and played in seven of the 11 tournaments, including both conference and regional championships. She had her best individual finish with a third-place finish at the Sonoma State Spring Invite and she helped the Golden Eagles to a second-place finish at the California Collegiate Athletic Association  Championships with an impressive sixth-place finish that was second on the team.

Andrade, a sophomore majoring in business marketing, had her second straight strong season for the Golden Eagles, highlighted by the second win of her career at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic after rounds of 70-69. She had the second-best scoring average on the team with a 75.18 average. Andrade played well down the stretch and was sixth at the CCAA Championships and 10th in the NCAA West Regional. She earned first-team All-CCAA honors for a second straight season.

Ayala, a junior majoring in animation, had her best season with the Golden Eagles in her third year with the program. She earned first-team All-CCAA honors for the first time and she also earned CCAA All-Tournament honors with a third-place finish at the CCAA Championships, where she shot the low round of the tournament on the final day. Ayala had the lowest scoring average on the team with a 74.88 average that was the best of her career.

Ozel, a newcomer to the program, was a welcome addition to the team. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Sonoma State and is completing a Master's degree at Cal State LA. She competed in six tournaments and a total of 15 rounds for the Golden Eagles and had a scoring average of 77.67. Her best finish was a tie for 18th at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational.

Richardson, a senior majoring in biology (ecology), had her best season with the Golden Eagles in her third and final year with the team. She competed in nine of Cal State LA's 11 tournaments and had a scoring average of 77.39. She had her best finish with a third-place showing at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational and she also played well with a tie for 16th place at the CCAA Championships.

Sjoerdsma completed her remarkable Cal State LA career with another outstanding.season. She had five top-10 finishes, including a second-place finish at the LA Invitational and a third-place finish in the Swan Memorial. She also tied for 10th at the NCAA West Regional and was 16th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Sjoerdsma had a scoring average of 75.32.

Sjoerdsma earned first-team All-CCAA honors for a fourth straight season. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and completed her Master's degree in educational technology in the spring.
