Golden Eagles Win Sonoma State Spring Invitational

SANTA ROSA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team successfully defended its Sonoma State Spring Invitational title with an even better twist.

The Golden Eagles, who shared the title last year with Simon Fraser, got the title all to themselves this time around, soaring to a 10-shot victory and earning the first solo tournament title in program history.

No. 28 Cal State LA shot a second-round score of 306 and finished the tournament with a 36-hole score of 604. Menlo was second at 614 and Academy of Art was third at 615. No. 20 Simon Fraser was fourth at 616 and No. 41 Sonoma State was fifth at 617.

Cal State LA opened up a 10-shot lead early in the round, saw it cut to as low as two strokes midway through the round before regaining its footing and closing out the tourney in championship fashion. The Golden Eagles, who led after the opening round, had the best round on Day 2 as well in a tie with Dominican.

Harley Richardson and Sarah Amaya had the top individual performances for the Golden Eagles. Richardson, who was one of only four golfers under par after the opening round, shot a 6-over-par 78 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third with a two-day total of 148.

Amaya, competing as an individual, also finished in a tie for third after a second-round of 76.

Both Richardson and Amaya had the best finishes of their Cal State LA careers and the best 36-hole scores.

Joshlyn Ayala also secured a top-10 finish with her second straight round of 75 that put her in a tie for ninth place at 150.

Daniela Andrade had Cal State LA's best round on Tuesday, a 1-over-par 73 and she climbed 17 places into a tie for 14th at 153.

Brenna Ozel shot a round of 80 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 18th with a total of 156 and Morgan Sjoerdsma shot a round of 80 to finish in a tie for 23rd with a total of 157.

Cal State LA will now set its sights on the CCAA Championships, which will begin on April 21 in Santa Barbara.
