Golden Eagles Move Into First With Win At East Bay

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team got more outstanding pitching and some timely power to earn a series win over Cal State East Bay on Sunday.

AJ Moreno allowed only one run over six innings and Alberto Prado delivered a three-run home run to stake the Golden Eagles to a 5-0 lead in a 7-3 victory over the Pioneers in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Pioneer Baseball Field. Cal State LA (20-14, 17-7 CCAA) took three of four in the series against Cal State East Bay (15-19, 11-13 CCAA) and moved into first place in the CCAA by percentage points over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Moreno turned in his best start of the season and allowed only four hits and one run over six innings. He didn't give up a run over the first five innings while Cal State LA built a 5-0 lead. He got out of a sixth-inning jam while stranding two and allowing only one run to leave with a 5-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-1 lead and Jared Robles and Ismael Quintero handled the final three innings on the mound to complete the win.

Prado's three-run home run in the third inning was the big hit of the game for the Golden Eagles, who had 10 hits in all. Ethan Gonzalez had three hits for Cal State LA, while Prado, Isaiah Marquez, and Ben Lee all had multi-hit games. Marquez scored three runs and reached base four times in the game.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of a throwing error to score twice in the first inning and Prado boosted the lead to 5-0 when he followed walks to Kadyn Victorian and Marquez with his team-leading sixth home run of the season. After Victorian and Marquez led off the inning with walks, Lee sacrificed them to second and third and Prado drilled his home run to left center.

After the Pioneers got on the board in the sixth, Cesar Chavez made it 6-1 with a fielder's choice that scored Victorian, and Javy Espinoza walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and make it 7-1.

Robles surrendered a run in the seventh inning to make it 7-2 and Quintero came on in the eighth with a runner on first and no outs and promptly got a fly out and a double-play ball to end the inning.

Quintero gave up a leadoff home run to pinch hitter Aidan Morton to start the ninth inning and the Pioneers loaded the bases with one out to make things interesting. Quintero, though, was unfazed and got an infield pop-up and a fly to center to end it.

Cal State LA will open a four-game series at home on Friday at 6 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay.
