SANTA BARBARA -- Cal State LA's women's golf team is in third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships after the opening round on Monday.
The Golden Eagles weren't at their best on a tough-scoring day at Sandpiper Golf Club, but they were able to position themselves in third with two rounds remaining in the three-day championships.
Cal State LA shot an opening-round of 324 and is two shots ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay and Sonoma State. Cal State East Bay has the lead after the opening round with a score of 302, while defending champion Cal State San Marcos is second at 304.
Cal State East Bay's Torrie Bowman and Cal State San Marcos' Kiara Hernandez share the opening-round lead at 2-over-par 74.Â
Daniela Andrade had the best opening round for the Golden Eagles and is in a tie for ninth after a round of 78. She had one birdie on her round, on the par-5 13th hole, to go along with 11 pars.
Sarah Amaya is in a tie for 14th after an opening-round of 80. She had two birdies on her round, on the par-4 seventh hole and on the par-5 15th hole.
Morgan Sjoerdsma and
Joshlyn Ayala are both in a tie for 17th after rounds of 83. Sjoerdsma birdied the par-4 10th hole to highlight her round, while Ayala had a birdie on the par-4 12th hole.
Harley Richardson is in 27th place after a round of 87. She had a birdie on the par4 third hole to highlight her round.
Round 2 tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
