CHICO -- Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to carry the momentum from Thursday's wild extra-inning win into a Friday doubleheader at Chico State.
After scoring 14 runs in an 11-inning win on Thursday, the Golden Eagles managed only four runs in two games on Friday and dropped identical 6-2 decisions to the Wildcats in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Nettleton Stadium. Cal State LA (21-20, 18-13 CCAA slipped into a fourth-place tie with Chico State (25-15, 18-13 CCAA) after the two losses.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in both games and were unable to recover. The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in the opener and Cal State LA didn't score until plating single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles struck back for two runs in the second inning, but were blanked after that in the seven-inning game.
Lino Zepeda pitched into the seventh inning in the opener; allowing six runs on nine hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Jonathan Manuel allowed three hits and no runs over the final two innings.
Malik Clayton went 3-for-3 for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Marquez was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Cal State LA trailed 6-0 before getting on the board in the eighth inning on a bunt single by
Cesar Chavez that drove in
Alberto Prado.Â
Marquez delivered a two-out single in the ninth inning to drive in
Ethan Gonzalez to account for the final run.
Chico State got a three-run home run from Jesse Gadd in the second inning and a solo shot from Phoenix Casias in the fourth inning.
Brandon Gutierrez started the nightcap for the Golden Eagles and gave up 12 hits and five earned runs over five innings. He walked four and struck out one.
Alejandro Morales pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Cal State LA managed only five hits in the nightcap.
After the Wildcats scored three times in the first inning, the Golden Eagles scored twice in the second inning to pull to within one run. Chavez walked and
Javy Espinoza singled to start the inning and
Drew Porter reached on a two-base error that enabled Chavez to score. A grounder by
Kadyn Victorian drove in Espinoza to make it 3-2.
That was it, though, for Cal State LA's offense and the Wildcats scored once in the bottom of the second and twice in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Cal State LA will conclude the series at Chico State with a single game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
