LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team, which will begin defense of its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday in San Marcos, had three players selected to the All-CCAA Team announced on Tuesday.
Corey Cofield II earned first-team honors,
Shane Bell was named to the second team and
Dominic Escobar earned honorable mention in voting by the conference coaches.
With Cofield II earning first-team honors, it marks the first time since 2013-14 that Cal State LA has had players named to the first team in back-to-back years. Bell and
Eche Okeke were named to the first team in 2024 and were the first Golden Eagles to earn first-team honors since Quinton Watkins in 2014.
Cofield II was joined on the first team by Cal State Dominguez Hills' Adam Afifi and Jeremy Dent-Smith, Rob Diaz of Cal Poly Humboldt, Andrew Henderson and Evan Oliver of Cal State San Bernardino, Isaiah Kerr and Jojo Murphy of Chico State, Chris Holley of Sonoma State and Jeremiah Jones of Stanislaus State.
Murphy was named the CCAA Player of the Year, while Jordan Hilstock of Cal State Dominguez HIlls was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Holley was named the Newcomer of the Year, Aidan Fowler of Cal Poly Humboldt was named the Freshman of the Year and Steve Becker of Cal State Dominguez Hills named the Coach of the Year.
Cofield II has had a tremendous senior season and leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 19.6 points per game. He had an amazing week last week as he scored a career-high 30 points, including 26 in the second half, to lead the Golden Eagles to a come-from-behind win at Cal State East Bay, clinching the tournament spot for Cal State LA. He also averages a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game.
He earned second-team honors a year ago.
Bell earned All-CCAA honors for a third straight season. He earned first-team honors for a first time last season and received second-team honors as a sophomore in 2023. He is second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points per game and he leads the team in assists with 4.1 per game.
Escobar also earned All-CCAA honors for a third season. He earned second-team honors last season after receiving honorable mention as a sophomore. He is third on the team in scoring with 10.9 points per game.
Cal State LA, as the No. 6 seed, will face No. 3 seed Cal State San Bernardino in a first-round CCAA Tournament game on Thursday at noon at Cal State San Marcos. The first-round contest is a rematch of last year's tournament championship game.
