LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams had some strong individual performances at USC on Saturday.
Drew Hill and Leon Tafirenyika had season's bests in the 200 and 400 for the men's team, while
Emmerson Wiggins and
Vanessa Portillo had season's bests in the 200 and javelin to highlight the day for the women's team at the Ron and Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational.
Hill finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 21.33 and was also fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.61. Tafirenyika was eighth in the 400 with a time of 48.65.
Gabriel Pearson was second in the 110 hurdles in 16.54 and fourth in the 400 hurdles in 56.78, while Matthew Bender was second in the javelin with a mark of 189-6.Â
Portillo got her season's best mark in the javelin with a mark of 115-10 despite being the only competitor in the women's division, while Wiggins posted a time of 25.38 in the 200 with a 13th-place finish.
Dalia Romo had a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 65.27.
"Today was a solid day for us. The weather was perfect for the sprints, although it posed a bit of a challenge for the distance runners," Cal State LA head coach
Tina Fernandes said. "On the women's side, we saw several seasonal and personal bests, with
Vanessa Portillo making strides in the javelin, Dalia leading the pack in the 400 hurdles, and Emmerson shining in the 200m.
"For the men, Leon is making progress and getting back on track. Since USC's track is quite narrow, we decided to concentrate on building strength in the 400 meters, and he's getting stronger with each practice, which is exciting. Matt Bender also showed improvement, and we're eager to see how he develops further. Gabriel Pearson is consistently performing well in the 400 hurdles, and Drew Hill had a solid day with noticeable progress in the 200m. We'll keep putting in the effort to improve both our women's and men's teams as we prepare for the upcoming big meets."
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday, April 5, at UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.
