MONTEREY PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team used some extra-inning power to earn a dramatic victory Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series finale against San Francisco State.
Javy Espinoza launched a two-out, two-run home run over the right-field fence to lift the Golden Eagles to a 9-7 victory in 10 innings over the Gators at East Los Angeles College. Cal State LA (10-12, 7-5 CCAA) won three of four games against San Francisco State (12-12, 8-8 CCAA), including the last two games of the series that were decided by late home runs.
Carson Panarisi hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning to key Cal State LA's 4-2 win in the seven-inning nightcap and Espinoza's two-run home run in the 10th inning on Sunday put a dramatic end to a tense struggle that saw five lead changes.
Ismael Quintero was outstanding again once in relief for the Golden Eagles and improved to 3-0 with the win. He blanked the Gators over the final 2 2/3 innings, scattering three hits and striking out one. Quintero stranded five runners on base during his outing.Â
Lino Zepeda got the start and gave up six hits and three runs over 4 2/3 innings.
Jared Robles gave up three hits and one earned run over 2 1/3 innings before
Atticus Gonzalez was touched for three hits and two runs over 2/3 inning. Quintero came on to get the final two outs of the eighth inning and added two more scoreless innings after.
David Eichhorn, who was last week's CCAA Pitcher of the Week after tossing a nine-inning, two-hit shutout against Cal State Dominguez Hills, started with four more shutout innings on Sunday before the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the fifth and a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to end his day after six innings.
The Golden Eagles added five runs off three San Francisco State relievers.
Malik Clayton went 2-for-5 with a home run and four runs batted in, while Albert Prado went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Kadyn Victorian had two hits and scored two runs.
Daniel Murillo went 3-for-6 with a run scored for San Francisco State, while Michael Cunningham went 3-for-5. Matt Sugden went 3-for-5, including a solo home run that tied the game in the eighth.
After San Francisco State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings, the Golden Eagles made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Clayton and then took the lead with two unearned runs in the sixth. Prado singled in one run to tie it at 3-3 and eventually scored on a passed ball to give Cal State LA the lead.
San Francisco State regained the lead with two runs in the seventh. Cunningham and Daniel Santos had run-scoring singles, but Gonzalez came on to get the final out and strand two runners on base.
Cal State LA took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. After Victorian singled, Clayton followed with his second home run of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead.
San Francisco State countered with two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 7-6 lead. Cunningham singled in the tying run and a sacrifice fly by Nicholas Allred gave the Gators the lead.
Cal State LA erased the deficit in the bottom of the eighth.

After Quintero tossed two scoreless innings, Prado picked up a two-out single to extend the inning and Espinoza ended the game with one big swing.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona.
