Young Places Fifth In Triple Jump At Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cal State LA's Jonon Young had another All-American performance Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Young, the defending national champion in the triple jump, had a season's best mark of 41-3.75 on her sixth and final attempt and finished fifth in that event at the Fall Creek Pavilion. Young was ninth after the first three jumps, but had marks of 40-11.50 and 41-3.75 to move up to fifth.

Emy Ntekpere of Central Washington won the event with a mark of 42-8, Auna Childress of Pittsburg St. was second at 41-11.50, Mikaela Miles of Embry-Riddle was third at 41-8, Ghada Hamdani of Minnesota State was fourth at 41-4.50 and Young was fifth less than an inch behind.

Young entered the championships with the No. 7 qualifying mark.

Last season, she had the No. 13 mark before stunning the field to take first in the triple jump and second in the long jump.

"We are incredibly proud of Jonon (JoJo) Young!," Cal State LA head coach Tina Fernandes said. "She entered the national competition ranked seventh and and finished in fifth, achieving her best performance of the indoor season this season.

"In her second year with us, she has been focused on building her strength and speed, which means even impressive jumps are on the horizon. Timing plays a crucial role in jumping, and when all the elements align, it will be truly remarkable. Right before indoor nationals, she also kicked off her outdoor season with a long jump of 6.25m. The best is yet to come."
