Golden Eagles Place Second In LA Spring Kickoff

DOWNEY -- Cal State LA's women's golf team had a second strong day at the LA Spring Kickoff on Tuesday and wound up finishing second among 16 teams at the two-day, 36-hole event.

The Golden Eagles shot a final round of 16-over-par 300 to finish just three shots behind No. 7 Cal State San Marcos at the Rio Hondo Golf Club. The Cougars also shot a 300 in the final round for a two-day total of 590.

Sonoma State shot a final round of 12-over 296 to take third, one shot ahead of Academy of Art, which shot a final round of 299.

Tilda Kvnarud of Cal State Monterey Bay won the individual title, shooting a round of 3-under-par 68 to finish at even-par 142 for the tournament. She won by two shots over Cal State LA's Morgan Sjoerdsma, Sonoma State's Avery Foster and Cal State San Marcos' Madison Murr. Foster shot a final-round of 69, while Sjoerdsma had a 1-under-par 70.

Kvarnrud won the tournament with an eagle on the par-5 third hole, her final hole of the day.

Sjoerdsma had one birdie - on the par-5 fourth hole - and 17 pars in an extremely steady round.

There were only three rounds under par on Tuesday.

First-round leader Joshlyn Ayala of Cal State LA battled admirably despite not being at her best on Tuesday. After starting the day with a two-shot advantage, she fell out of the lead before climbing back into a tie after a birdie on the par-5 15th hole. She bogeyed her last three holes to finish in solo fifth at four-over-par 146. She was the only player under par on Monday..

Cal State LA Harley Richardson battled after a rough start on Tuesday and finished 20th overall with a two-day total of nine-over-par 151. She shot a 1-under-par 34 on the back-nine with a birdie and eight straight pars to finish her round.

Daniela Andrade finished 22nd for the Golden Eagles at 10-over-par after her second straight round of 5-over-par 76. 

Brenna Ozel finished 37th overall after a round of 77 that was highlighted by a birdie on her first hole of the day, the par-5 third hole.

Cal State LA also had three other players competing as individuals. Sarah Amaya shot a final round of 78, which was seven shots better than her opening round and was highlighted by a birdie on the par5 15th hole.

Carissa Freeman finished 31st after a final round of 80 that featured a pair of birdies and Lehapi Veikune finished 37th after a final round of 79 that included a birdie on the par-4 second hole.

Cal State LA will return to action on Feb. 24 at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay, where Sjoerdsma is the defending champion.
