HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team picked up an important road win on Thursday with the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation regular season winding down.
The Golden Eagles led nearly wire-to-wire in a 75-62 win over Cal State East Bay Thursday in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (17-9, 12-9 CCAA) moved into a tie for fifth with Sonoma State in the conference standings with one game remaining.Â
Cal State LA has already clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament, which begins next week at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles, who are also ranked No. 9 in the NCAA West Region poll, jumped out to a 25-17 lead after one quarter and had a 40-27 advantage at halftime. After the Pioneers (9-19, 7-14 CCAA) cut the margin to three points in the third quarter, the Golden Eagles closed the period with an 11-4 run and opened the fourth quarter with a 9-1 run to take an 18-point lead and essentially put the game out of reach.
Lily Buggs continued her strong play with a game-high 22 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Ronyae Jackson had 13 points and seven rebounds in 20 outstanding minutes off the bench and
Nevaeh Asiasi had 12 points and six rebounds.
Ariyah Smith had a team-high 15 points to lead the Pioneers, while Joia Armstrong had 11 points and five rebounds.
Amaya Fuentes had 10 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Olivia Hodges had nine points and nine rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 44.4 percent for the game (28-of-63), including a 75 percent clip in the first period when the Golden Eagles made 9-of-12. The Golden Eagles were just 6-of-21 from 3-point range and were 13-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Cal State East Bay shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) and was 5-of-17 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 11-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 456-34 rebounding edge and committed 20 turnovers to 17 for Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles trailed only once, 3-2, before an offensive rebound and basket by Hodges were followed by 3-pointers by
Sofia Fidelus and Fuentes to cap an 8-0 run. FA layup by Asiasi gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 19-9 and the Golden Eagles settled for a 25-17 lead after one quarter.
Cal State LA led by double-digit margins for most of the second quarter and took a 40-27 halftime lead after free throws by Buggs and Hodges.
Cal State East Bay pulled to within 46-43 with 3:42 left in the third period, but an offensive rebound and basket by Hodges stopped the run and a jumper by Fidelus and three free throws by Buggs with one second left in the period extended the lead to 57-47.
Cal State LA scored the first six points of the final quarter on baskets by Buggs, Hodges and Jackson and led by as many as 18 points.
Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a game at San Francisco State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
