SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team survived an upset bid from San Francisco State on Saturday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season finale in Main Gym.
Nevaeh Asiasi scored the game-winning basket with five seconds left and then got the game-sealing block and rebound with time running out in a 60-59 victory. Cal State LA (18-9, 13-9 CCAA) finished in a tie for fifth in the conference and earned the No. 6 seed for the CCAA Tournament, which begins Thursday at Cal State San Marcos. Cal State LA will face No. 3 seed Chico State in a first-round contest.
Asiasi led the way on Saturday with a team-high 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She recorded her second career double-double and her first since Feb. 2, 2023, also at San Francisco State.
Olivia Hodges picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Alexsandra Alvarado had a game-high 25 points for San Francisco State (9-18, 7-15 CCAA).
Sofia Fidelus had 10 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Mary Cotton had five points.
Cal State LA shot 37.9 percent for the game (22-of-58) and was just 3-of-12 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) and was 8-of-26 from 3-point range. The Gators were 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles had a 41-29 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 16 for the Gators.Â
Cal State LA scored the first nine points of the game with seven coming from Asiasi and two from
Lily Buggs. The Golden Eagles took a 15-3 lead midway through the first period and held a 20-16 after one quarter.
A 3-pointer by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 23-16 lead in the second quarter, but the Gators sliced the margin to 27-26 by halftime.
Cal State LA scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 38-26 lead after a basket by Hodges, but San Francisco State battled back and Cal State LA needed three free throws by Hodges and two by Asiasi to take a 48-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
A 3-pointer by Alvarado gave the Gators their first lead at 57-56 with three minutes to play and a tip-in by Ana Daniels gave the Gators a 59-58 lead with 2:18 remaining. A steal by Cotton with 11 seconds remaining got possession for the Golden Eagles and Asiasi scored in the lane for the go-ahead basket with five seconds left. She then blocked Alvarado's game-winning attempt to end it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a first-round CCAA Tournament game against Chico State at 5:30 p.m.
