Golden Eagles Pick Up Another Second-Place Finish

ALAMEDA -- Cal State LA's Daniela Andrade tied a program record while claiming a share of medalist honors and the Golden Eagles finished second as a team in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic on Tuesday

Andrade had the low round of the day, a 3-under-par 69 and finished in a first-place tie with Cal State San Marcos' Madison Murr with a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139 at the Corica Park Golf Course. The 139 matches the program record set by Morgan Sjoerdsma when she captured the Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic in 2024.

The tournament win is the second for Andrade, who won the RJGA Shootout at Estrella Tournament in the fall of 2023 in her very first collegiate tournament. She went on to earn California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year honors last year.

Cal State LA finished second to tournament host Cal State East Bay in a tight battle that went down to the wire once again. The Golden Eagles surged to the lead during the final round before finishing second by two shots. Cal State LA finished with a final round of 293 and a 36-hole score of 585, which was six shots better than the Golden Eagles shot in this tournament a year ago and matches the program record set in the fall of 2023 at the Dennis Rose Invitational in Hawaii.

It's the second straight second-place finish for the Golden Eagles, who also placed in the runner-up spot at their own LA Spring Kickoff earlier this month. It's the third second-place finish of the 2024-25 season for Cal State LA, who also have two more top-five finishes in six events so far this season.

Andrade had a spectacular tournament for the Golden Eagles, eclipsing the 140 two-day score she set last season while winning the RJGA Shootout and establishing her best score of 2024-25 by an amazing 13 shots. She started the day at 2-under-par and slipped back to 1-under after a bogey on the par-4 fourth hole. She then rattled off five birdies, including four on the first eight holes of the back-nine, to surge into sole possession of the lead before Murr caught her on the last for the tie.

In all, Andrade had eight birdies and one eagle during the two rounds.

Cal State LA finished the tournament with three eagles as both Carissa Freeman and Lehapi Veikune had eagles on Tuesday. Freeman got hers on the par-5 15th hole, while Veikune got hers on the par-5 17th, which was her final hole of the day.

Morgan Sjoerdsma fired her second straight round of 74 to finish in a tie for 12th place at 4-over-par 148. She wound up tied with Veikune, who was competing as an individual. Veikune had a second-round 76 that was highlighted by an eagle on her last.

Joshlyn Ayala had a tremendous bounce back on Tuesday and shot a even-par 72 that included five birdies, including two in her last three holes and four in her last six. She jumped up 26 spots to a tie for 25th at 151.

Freeman finished 35th after a second-round of 78 left her with a 36-hole score of 153. She had an eagle and four birdies during the tournament.

Harley Richardson shot a final round of 81 to finish 42nd with a 36-hole total of 154. She had shot her best round of the season on Monday with a 1-over-par 73.

Cal State LA will return to action on March 10 at the Fujikura Invitational hosted by Cal State San Marcos at the Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista.
