Golden Eagles Get Back In The Win Column

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put an end to its recent losing streak with an important road win in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak with a 78-64 win over the Otters Thursday night in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (14-8) jumped out to a 25-13 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

The Golden Eagles remained in sixth place in the conference, one game back of fourth-place Cal State San Bernardino and one-half game back of Sonoma State. The Golden Eagles also moved two games clear of seventh-place of San Francisco State and Cal Poly Humboldt with five conference games remaining.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

Lily Buggs and Amaya Fuentes had 19 points each to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures on Thursday. Buggs had 19 points and four assists, while Fuentes had 19 points and three rebounds.

Sha'nece Garrett had 12 points and Jayden McNeal had 11 points for the Otters (3-20, 0-17 CCAA).

Nevaeh Asiasi had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while Olivia Hodges had 13 points and eight rebounds. Mary Cotton had six points and two rebounds.

Cal State LA had an excellent offensive night and shot 61.4 percent for the game (35-of-57), including a 4-of-9 performance from 3-point range. The free-throw shooting was not good as the Golden Eagles made only 4-of-10 attempts.

Cal State Monterey Bay shot 45 percent (27-of-60) and was 5-of-13 from 3-point range. The Otters were 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 31-27 rebounding edge and both teams committed 13 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game on layups by Asiasi, Hodges and Buggs and never trailed. Fuentes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to boost the lead to 12-4 and a layup by Ronyae Jackson gave Cal State LA its first double-digit lead at 19-8. Asiasi scored the last four points of the period to give the Golden Eagles a 25-13 lead after one quarter.

A layup by Ashari Cassell gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half, 36-20, but the Otters closed the period well and closed to within 42-34 at halftime.

Buggs opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 45-34 and baskets by Buggs, Asiasi and Fuentes pushed the lead to 53-38. A jumper by Buggs just before the buzzer gave the Golden Eagles a 58-46 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Otters got as close as 60-51 with eight minutes to go, but a three-point play by Fuentes stopped the run and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. A layup by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 74-57, with 2:40 to play.

Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Stanislaus State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
