Golden Eagles Rally For An OT Win Over Warriors

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball staged a late rally for the ages Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Stanislaus Slate.

The Golden Eagles erased a seven-point deficit in the final minute of regulation and stunned the Warriors, 84-80, in overtime in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (15-8, 10-8 CCAA) moved into fifth place in the conference standings, one-half game ahead of Sonoma State and two games ahead of seventh-place Cal Poly Humboldt with four games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

It took a miraculous comeback in regulation and a surge in the final minute of overtime for the Golden Eagles to improve their position in the standings. 

Lily Buggs led the way with a season-high 32 points and seven rebounds, while Amaya Fuentes had 14 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. Olivia Hodges had 10 points and 19 rebounds for her team-leading sixth double-double of the season. Hodges, the CCAA's leading rebounder, has reached double-digits in rebounds 11 times.

Amya Vangkham-Griffin had a team-high 23 points for Stanislaus State (5-19, 4-14 CCAA), while Quinn Garrett had 16 points.

Ronyae Jackson had 13 points for the Golden Eagles and was instrumental in the late comeback by the Golden Eagles. Nevaeh Asiasi had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Cal State LA shot just 38.5 percent for the game (30-of-78) and was 13-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 11-of-21 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles did shoot well when it mattered most, going 8-of-17 overall and 4-of-8 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter and 4-of-8 overall in overtime, including one 3-pointer.

Stanislaus State shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) and was 13-of-27 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 7-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 51-41 rebounding advantage and committed 11 turnovers to 17 for the Warriors.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as eight points in the opening quarter, 19-11, but a basket by Asiasi and a 3-pointer by Fuentes helped them close the gap to 20-16 by the end of the period.

The Golden Eagles scored the first nine points of the second quarter, thanks to a three-point play by Buggs and back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and a returning Sofia Fidelus that gave them a 25-20 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Jackson and Buggs gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 36-27, but Stanislaus State scored the next nine points to tie the game at halftime.

Stanislaus State scored the first five points of the third quarter and opened up a 10-point lead, 49-39, late in the period. Cal State LA stormed back with a 3-pointer by Jackson, back-to-back baskets by Hodges and Asiasi and a 3-pointer by Buggs to tie it up before a late free throw gave the Warriors a one-point lead entering the fourth.

The Golden Eagles took a 59-57 lead after a layup by Hodges, but the Warriors scored the next seven points and appeared poised for the upset win after a jumper by Da'myiah Lewis put them ahead, 71-64, with two minutes remaining.

The Warriors were still up by seven points, with the ball, entering the final minute before the Golden Eagles unleashed their miraculous late rally. The comeback was fueled by steals.

A steal by Asiasi led to a layup by Ashari Cassell that made it 71-66 with 47 seconds left. A steal by Jackson led to a pair of free throws by Buggs that made it 71-68 with 34 seconds left. Another steal by Jackson led to the game-tying 3-pointer by Fuentes that sent the contest into overtime.

A basket by Hodges gave the Golden Eagles a 76-74 lead with 2:25 to go in overtime, but the Warriors took a 77-76 lead on a 3-pointer by Vangkham-Griffin with 1:24 left. A Buggs basket put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 78-77, with 56 seconds to go, but the Warriors tied the game with a free throw with 47 seconds remaining.

Jackson then made the biggest basket of the game, a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 38 seconds left. After a Stanislaus State miss, Buggs hit two free throws for an 83-78 lead with 18 seconds left. A pair of free throws made it a one-possession game, but Buggs hit a free throws to put the game out of reach.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against second-place Chico State.
