SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletikc Association Tournament with a hard-fought five-set win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
The Golden Eagles faced a 2-1 deficit in sets, but came back for a 23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12 win over the Otters in a conference match in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (15-5, 11-2 CCAA) wrapped up a spot in its 10th straight conference tournament. The Golden Eagles and Cal State San Bernardino are the only two schools to reach the conference tournament in all 10 years.
Ayjah Landers had a match-high 21 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Samarah DaCoud had 17 kills and a career-high 21 digs.
Lilly Bandle had 15 kills and 10 blocks for Cal State Monterey Bay (5-15, 4-9 CCAA), while Zoe Haan had nine kills.
Arielle Chandler had 41 set assists and two aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Juliana Speiski had 20 digs and
Tehya Chadwick had eight kills.
Cal State LA had a 60-45 advantage in kills and outhit the Otters, .139- .092. Cal State LA had six aces and eight errors, while Cal State Monterey Bay had seven aces and 10 errors. The Otters had a 12-7 advantage in blocks.
The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing after three sets, but had a strong performance to even the match in the fourth. Cal State LA jumped out to a 10-3 lead and fought off several Otter challenges before pulling away at the end. A kill by Chadwick started a 4-0 run that extended an 18-15 lead to 22-15. A kill by Landers, an ace by
Zuhal Cetin and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the seven-point lead. After the Otters made it 22-16, a bad set, a kill by DaCoud and a block by
Madison Clark and Chandler sent the game to a fifth set.
Cal State LA trailed 9-8 in the final set before a kill by DaCoud and an ace by
Rebeca Marquez put the Golden Eagles ahead, 10-9. The Otters tied it at 10-10, but two kills by DaCoud and an attack error made it 13-10. The Otters pulled to within two at 13-11 and 14-12 befor a ball-handling error ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at San Francisco State on Saturday.
