Golden Eagles In The Mix At Regional Preview

PUEBLO, COLORADO -- Cal State LA's women's golf team is very much in the mix following a strong performance in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Regional Preview.

The Golden Eagles are in a tie for fourth after the first round as the field is chasing defending national champion Dallas Baptist. Cal State LA shot a team score of 309 over the challenging Pueblo Country Club. Dallas Baptist shot a 289 and has an 11-shot lead over tournament host Colorado State-Pueblo. Cal State San Marcos is third at 304, five shots ahead of Cal State LA and Western Washington.

Joshlyn Ayala is in contention once again after an opening round of 1-over-par 72 on a par-71 course.that has her in a tie for fourth, one shot out of second and three shots behind leader Neige Dunn of MSU Denver.

Cal State LA's day was also highlighted by a pair of eagles by Sarah Amaya and Talia Gutman, the only two eagles of the day for the tournament field. Amaya dropped a 20-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 11th hole, while Gutman made a 4-foot putt for eagle on her last hole of the day, the par-5 seventh hole, which pushed the Golden Eagles into a tie for fourth.

Ayala had three birdies on the day and started her day with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole, her first of the day. She had another birdie on the par-5 11th hole to get to 2-under-par and then had her final birdie on the par-3 third hole to get back to 1-over-par.

Gutman was next for the Golden Eagles and is tied for 36th after a round of 78.

Daniela Andrade is tied for 47th after a round of 79 that was highlighted by a pair of birdies on par-5 holes. She had her first birdie on the 14th hole and then birdied the par-5 seventh hole, which was her 17th hole of the day.

Amaya and Rilee Crosby are tied for 55th after opening rounds of 80. Amaya had an eagle on her second hole of the day to get to 1-under-par and got a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole, while Crosby had one birdie on the par-4 first hole.

The second and final round will be contested on Tuesday.
