POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put itself in position for a big road California Collegiate Athletic Association win on Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the task.
The Golden Eagles, coming off an exhausting three-overtime loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, took a narrow one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Broncos enjoyed a 22-11 edge over the final 10 minutes of a 63-53 win in Kellogg Arena. The short-handed Golden Eagles (7-4, 2-4 CCAA) dropped their third straight game, while Cal Poly Pomona (10-2, 5-1 CCAA) earned a weekend split.
Mary Cotton had her best game of the season for the Golden Eagles, recording a season-high 16 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 20 effective minutes.
Lily Buggs had eight points and seven rebounds, while
Ashanti Dias had eight points and four rebounds.
Sydney Nelson had a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds for the Broncos, while Kalaya Buggs had 15 points and four rebounds.
Amaya Fuentes had seven points for the Golden Eagles, while
Nevaeh Asiasi had six points.
Cal State LA shot just 31.7 percent for the game (19-of-60) and was just 4-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 32.8 percent (19-of-58) and was 5-of-17 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 20-of-24 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles were only 5-of-20 from the floor in the fourth quarter, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range, while the Broncos were 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
Cal State LA led by as many as eight points in the first quarter and had a 14-6 lead after a 3-pointer by
Ronyae Jackson. The Golden Eagles settled for a 16-12 lead after one quarter.Â
The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven points in the second quarter after a 3-pointer by Dias gave them a 27-20 lead midway through the period. The Broncos, though, went on a 12-2 run before a layup by Dias made it 31-30 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles trailed by narrow margins for most of the third quarter, but took a 41-39 lead after a 3-pointer by Dias and grabbed a 42-41 lead after a free throw by Fuentes heading into the fourth.
The Golden Eagles, though, gave up the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to trail, 52-42, and couldn't recover. A three-point play by Fuentes cut the margin to six at 52-46, but that's as close as they would get.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday at Sonoma State.
