Golden Eagles Return To Their Winning Ways

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put an emphatic end to a frustrating losing streak on Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles snapped a three-game skid with a 63-38 win over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in the Wolves Den. Cal State LA (8-4, 3-4 CCAA) led 18-4 after one quarter and closed the game out with a 17-6 advantage in the fourth quarter over Sonoma State (5-7, 3-3 CCAA).

Sofia Fidelus poured in a career-high 22 points in the win, 19 of them coming in an explosive first half. She was 5-of-10 from 3-point range and also had six rebounds. Lily Buggs had 18 points and nine rebounds and scored 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. She hit double-digits in scoring for the seventh time this season.

Olivia Hodges had eight points and a career-high 23 rebounds, moving up to No. 2 on Cal State LA's all-time single-game rebounds list, just two shy of the record of 25 set by Ruth Smith in 1980. It was Hodges' second game with at least 20 rebounds this season and her second in three games. She has recorded double-digits in rebounds in seven games and leads the CCAA in rebounds with 11.1 per game.

Alysa Lopez had 14 points for Sonoma State.

Nevaeh Asiasi had seven points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Ronyae Jackson had six points and three rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 31.8 percent for the game (21-of-66) and was 9-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-20 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot just 24.2 percent (15-of-62) and was only 2-of-18 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles had a 59-37 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 15 for the Seawolves.

Cal State LA held Sonoma State to only two field goals in the opening quarter while jumping out to an 18-4 lead. The Golden Eagles led 10-4 before a 3-pointer by Buggs started an 8-0 run to close the period. Fidelus followed that with a 3-pointer and Buggs hit a jumper before the quarter ended.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter and took a 33-20 halftime lead on a late 3-pointer by Fidelus.

A 3-pointer by Jackson gave the Golden Eagles a 46-30 lead late in the third quarter and they took a 46-32 into the final period. Cal State LA put the game away by limiting the Seawolves to only six points in the final period.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at Cal State San Marcos at 1 p.m.
