LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got its offense on track Thursday night and posted an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles shot better than 50 percent in three of the four quarters in an 80-72 win over the Cougars in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-5, 8-5 CCAA) struggled offensive only in the second quarter, but the Golden Eagles made up for its on the defensive end and outscored the Cougars, 15-8, in the second period to take a 36-29 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles then shot 55.6 percent in the third period to take command of the game with a 61-46 lead entering the final period.
Amaya Fuentes led the way with a career-high 24 points, hitting a career-high six 3-pointers, including five in the third and fourth quarters that helped the Golden Eagles pull away. It was her second game with more than 20 points this season. She also had eight rebounds and three blocks.
Lily Buggs also had a strong game with 18 points, three rebounds and four assists and
Sofia Fidelus had 11 points and five assists.
Tatum Tamashiro had 21 points to lead three players in double figures for Cal State San Marcos (3-15, 3-9 CCAA). Rory Hetrick had 15 points and Camille Johnson had 12 points for the Cougars.
Nevaeh Asiasi had 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, narrowly missing a triple-double for the Golden Eagles.
Olivia Hodges had six points and six rebounds and
Mary Cotton had six points and three rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 46.4 percent for the game (32-of-69), including 53 percent in the first quarter, 56 percent in the second period and 7-of-14 in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-24 from 3-point range with Fuentes going 6-of-12 and Fidelus making 3-of-4. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. The Cougars shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) and was 11-of-29 from 3-point range. They were also 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 41-33 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 12 for the Cougars.
In an evenly-played first quarter, Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 21-18 lead with a 3-pointer, right before Maddie Leiva hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 21-21 after one quarter.
The Golden Eagles only allowed eight points in the second quarter and took a 36-29 halftime lead. A jumper by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles 36-26 lead before a late 3-pointer by Rose Morse made it 36-29 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles finally shook loose of the Cougars midway through the third quarter. Leading by just four at 45-41, Cal State LA got three 3-pointers from Fuentes and layups by
Ronyae Jackson and Cotton to open up a 61-46 lead after three quarters.
Amaya hit another 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to spark a 9-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 70-46 with 6:45 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Sonoma State at 1 p.m.
