LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team saw its lengthy home winning streak come to an end Saturday against an inspired Sonoma State team.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early and couldn't make up any ground in a disappointing 64-49 California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to the Seawolves. Cal State LA (13-6, 8-6 CCAA) had won six straight home games and were 8-1 in University Gym heading into Saturday's important game.
The Golden Eagles slipped into a tie for fifth in the conference with surging Cal State San Bernardino, while Sonoma State (10-9, 8-5 CCAA) pulled into fourth place, one-half game ahead of the Golden Eagles.
Olivia Hodges had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Lily Buggs had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Alysa Lopez had a game-high 18 points to lead the Seawolves, while Sheriene Arikat had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Sofia Fidelus had six points and six assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Amaya Fuentes had five points and four rebounds.
Cal State LA shot just 35.1 percent for the game (20-of-57) and was just 3-of-16 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. The Seawolves shot 39.4 percent (28-of-71) and were 6-of-17 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 2-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Sonoma State had a 43-35 rebounding edge and committed only 11 turnovers to 17 for the Golden Eagles.
The game was in complete contrast to the first meeting between the two schools, which Cal State LA took by a 63-38 count in Rohnert Park last month.Â
The Golden Eagles allowed the first five points of the game and only led once, 13-12, after a layup by Hodges with 2:21 to go in the first quarter. The Seawolves, though, closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to take an 18-13 lead.
Cal State LA closed to within four points after a jumper by
Ashari Cassell, but Lopez hit a jumper to boost the lead to 33-27 at halftime.
A basket by Buggs to open the third quarter cut the margin to 33-29, but the Seawolves went on an 8-0 run to take a 42-31 lead. They led by as many as 15 points in the quarter before a layup by Hodges made it 52-40 heading into the fourth.
A three-point play by Buggs pulled the Golden Eagles to within 54-46 with eight minutes to play, but the Golden Eagles scored only three more points and were unable to get any closer.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against second-place Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m.
