Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Road Win At Humboldt

ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team used a big third-quarter advantage to pick up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win on Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles outscored Cal Poly Humboldt, 25-9, in the third quarter and held on for a 55-52 victory in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (12-4, 7-4 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and pulled to within one game of third-place Chico State in the conference race.

Lily Buggs led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds, while Amaya Fuentes had 14 points and four rebounds. Olivia Hodges had a 10-point, 19-rebound double-double and recorded her fifth double-double of the season.

The 19 rebounds were Hodges' third-highest total of the season and she now has the four highest rebounding games in the CCAA.

Riley Sanz had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Cal Poly Humboldt (5-12, 4-7 CCAA).

Sofia Fidelus had nine points and three assists, while Nevaeh Asiasi had four points, five rebounds and five assists.

Cal State LA shot 34.9 percent for the game (22-of-63) and made 6-of-23 attempts from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were just 5-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Cal Poly Humboldt shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) and was just 6-of-28 from 3-point range. The 'Jacks were 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 40-33 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 18 for Cal Poly Humboldt.

In the decisive third quarter, the Golden Eagles were 9-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range, while Cal Poly Humboldt was 4-of-13 overall and 0-of-4 from 3-point range.

The Golden Eagles allowed the first seven points of the game, but then scored the next eight for their first lead. Fuentes got the Golden Eagles on the board with a 3-pointer, Buggs hit a jumper and then hit a 3-pointer for the lead. A basket by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles a 12-10 lead after the first period.

Cal State LA had a 22-17 lead after a basket by Fuentes, but Cal Poly Humboldt scored the final eight points of the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by Fuentes put the Golden Eagles ahead for good, 29-27, and a pair of free throws by Fuentes and a jumper by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 40-30. A 3-pointer by Ronyae Jackson and two free throws by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 47-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.

After the 'Jacks cut the lead to six points, Asiasi stopped the surge to make it 49-41 with 5:48 to go. A 3-pointer by Fidelus boosted the lead to 52-43 with four minutes left. A layup by Hodges made it 54-46 with 1:39 to go and a free throw by Buggs put the game out of reach at 55-50 with 15 seconds remaining.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Chico State at 1 p.m.
