SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got a clutch buzzer-beating game-tying 3-pointer from
Amaya Fuentes to cap a furious fourth-quarter rally, but host Cal State San Bernardino hit a pair of game-tying baskets and ultimately prevailed in a marathon battle in Coussoulis Arena.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, but sent the game into overtime on Fuentes' 3-pointer. The Golden Eagles then were in position to win in each of the first two overtimes, only to see the Coyotes extend the game twice with late baskets before pulling away for a 93-88 win in triple overtime. Cal State LA (7-3, 2-3 CCAA) dropped its second straight game, while Cal State San Bernardino (3-7, 2-3 CCAA) exacted a bit of revenge against the team that knocked it out of the conference tournament last season on its home court.
Olivia Hodges had a tremendous game for the Golden Eagles, recording a career-high 21 rebounds to go along with 17 points for her fourth double-double of the season. The 17 points were a season-high and just one off her career high. The 21 rebounds are the most in game for the Golden Eagles since Jada Johnson also had 21 at Azusa Pacific on Nov. 16, 2021 and tied for second all-time. Ruth Smith had 25 rebounds in a game inÂ
Lily Buggs also had a double-double with a season-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, setting a new program single-game record with 19 free-throw attempts and tying a career-high with 13 makes. Fuentes finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Lauryn Morris had a team-high 21 points to lead four Coyotes in double figures, including a game-tying jumper with four seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Sofia Fidelus had 11 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Kyara Walter had seven.
Cal State LA shot 31.9 percent for the game (29-of-91) and was 7-of-24 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 23-of-36 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 34.1 percent (28-of-82) and was 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 33-of-44 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 64-62 rebounding edge and committed 23 turnovers to 22 for the Coyotes.
After coming alive in the fourth quarter with an 8-of-16 performance from the floor that gave them a 24-19 edge for the period, the Golden Eagles were just 5-of-28 in the overtime periods, including 2-of-21 in the final two.
The Golden Eagles trailed for most of the first half before a late 3-pointer by Fuentes gave them a 31-30 halftime lead.Â
Cal State LA took a 35-30 lead in the third quarter, but the Coyotes scored the final seven points of the period to take a 48-43 lead into the fourth.
The Golden Eagles then surrendered the first six points of the fourth quarter to trail, 54-43, and found themselves down by as many as 12 points, 58-46, with 6:18 to go. Cal State LA still trailed by 10, 65-55 before scoring the next nine points on a free throw by Fidelus, a three-point play by Hodges, another free throw by Fidelus, two free throws by Buggs and a layup by Fuentes that made it 65-64 with 25 seconds remaining.
After two Cal State San Bernardino free throws made it 67-64, the Coyotes missed a pair of free throws,
Ronyae Jackson got the rebound of the second miss and Fuentes got the game-tying 3-pointer.
Cal State LA then took a 75-72 lead late in the first overtime, before Cal State San Bernardino's Rebecca Saidoff hit her game-tying 3-pointer with two seconds left to send the game to a second OT.
Once again, Cal State LA had a late lead, 82-79, after a pair of free throws by Jackson with 1:20 to go. Cal State San Bernardino, though, got a free throw from Morris with 48 seconds left and a game-tying basket from Morris with four seconds remaining.
Cal State San Bernardino got out to a 90-83 lead in the third overtime period before a Buggs 3-pointer and two free throws by Buggs got the Golden Eagles within 92-88, but that's as close as they would get.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona at 1 p.m.
