Golden Eagles Keep Rolling With Fourth Straight Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team completed an impressive weekend with another outstanding performance on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won their fourth straight game with a 79-46 win over Cal State East Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-4, 6-4 CCAA) used a 33-9 advantage in the third quarter to break open the game.

Nevaeh Asiasi had 18 points, five rebounds and eight assists to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Amaya Fuentes had 17 points and three rebounds and Sofia Fidelus had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. 

Aunika Hornung had eight points to lead Cal State East Bay (7-10, 5-5 CCAA), while Taylor Eldredge had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with five points.

Mary Cotton had nine points, six rebounds and two assists, while Lily Buggs had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Olivia Hodges, the leading rebounder in the CCAA, had seven rebounds and four points.

Cal State LA shot 40 percent for the game (32-of-80) and was 8-of-31 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 30.8 percent for the game (20-of-65) and was 3-of-15 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. 

Both teams had 45 rebounds. Cal State LA committed only 11 turnovers, while Cal State East Bay committed 30.

The Golden Eagles had 10 players score in the game.

Cal State LA started quickly once again and scored the first nine points of the game on a basket by Hodges, two baskets by Asiasi and a 3-pointer by Fidelus. A 3-pointer by Fidelus gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 16-6, but the Pioneers closed the quarter with an 8-2 run to close to within 18-14 after the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Pioneers, 17-6, in the second quarter and took a 35-20 halftime lead after a late 3-pointer by Fuentes.

Cal State LA then scored the first nine points of the third quarter, including a 3-pointer by Fuentes, to take a 44-20 lead. The Golden Eagles then scored the next nine points to make it an 18-2 run that extended their lead to 53-22. By the time the period ended, Cal State LA got 3-pointers from Ronyae Jackson and Cotton and a late free throw from Kyara Walter to take a 68-29 lead into the final period.

 A fourth-quarter layup by Mariah Blake gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 79-35, with four minutes left.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a game at Cal Poly Humboldt.
