Golden Eagles Race To A Third Straight Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got off to a big first-quarter lead for a third straight game and proceeded to extend its winning streak to three straight games as a result.

The Golden Eagles raced out to a 27-10 lead after one period and went on to a 79-49 victory over San Francisco State Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-4, 5-4 CCAA) led by 15 points at halftime and outscored San Francisco State, 40-25, in the second half.

Nevaeh Asiasi led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Olivia Hodges had 15 points and nine rebounds. Amaya Fuentes had 13 points and six rebounds and Ronyae Jackson had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Sage Bridges-Bey had 12 points, four rebounds and four steals for San Francisco State (6-8, 4-5 CCAA).

Mary Cotton had nine points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Sofia Fidelus had five points, three rebounds and three assists.

Cal State LA shot 45.8 percent for the game (33-of-72) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) and was 4-of-16 from 3-point range. The Gators were 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Cal State LA had a 50-28 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 18 for the Gators.

Cal State LA shot 71 percent in the first quarter (10-of-14), including 6-of-9 from 3-point range while jumping out to the big early lead.

Fuentes hit a 3-pointer to open the game and Asiasi scored two straight baskets to give the Golden Eagles a quick 7-0 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Fidelus and Fuentes and a layup by Asiasi staked the Golden Eagles to a 15-2 lead. A 3-pointer by Kyara Walter gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the quarter, 27-6, and they settled for a 27-10 lead after one quarter.

A three-point play by Hodges gave the Golden Eagles a late 39-20 lead in the second quarter and they led 39-24 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles led by at least 16 points the rest of the way, taking a 57-31 lead after a layup by Jackson late in the third quarter.

A layup by Brooklyn Giles gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 79-46, with one minutes left in the game.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 1 p.m.
