Golden Eagles Turn Things Around For A Top Finish

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's golf team stormed up the leaderboard Tuesday in the final round of the RJGA Shootout at Estrella.

The Golden Eagles shot the low round of the day and shot up from 12th place to fourth on the final round of the tournament. Cal State LA improved its score by 21 shots with a round of 296 on Tuesday that left the Golden Eagles with a two-day total of 613 and the fourth-place finish. The round of 296 was the low round of the tournament.

Cal State LA even took the lead briefly midway through the second round and wound up just three shots back of tournament champion Colorado Christian and one shot back of second-place Cal State East Bay and Lubbock Christian.

The Golden Eagles finished one shot ahead of Colorado State Pueblo and Point Loma, who tied for fifth in an extremely tight tournament finish that saw six teams within four shots of the lead.

The tournament was won by Raya Schulz of Colorado Christian, who shot a final-round 69 for a total of 144 and a two-shot win.

Morgan Sjoerdsma had the best individual finish for the Golden Eagles and wound up in a tie for sixth at 4-over-par 148 after a second-round score of even-par 72. Sjoerdsma had three birdies in her first nine holes to pull close to the lead and improved her score by four shots. She wound up four shots behind the leader and just two shots out of second.

Daniela Andrade, who won this tournament last year in her collegiate debut, shot a 3-over-par 75 for the Golden Eagles on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 15th at 8-over-par 152. She had five birdies over the two rounds.

Joshlyn Ayala shot the best round of her Cal State LA career with an even-par 72 that moved her up to a tie for 19th. She improved her score from Monday's opening round by nine shots. Ayala birdied her first hole of the day, bogeyed her second and then recorded 16 straight pars.

Harley Richardson improved her score by six strokes with a second round of 5-over-par 77 that put her in a tie for 43rd at 160. Richardson got off to a tremendous start with three birdies on her first nine holes of the day.

Lehapi Veikune improved her score by seven shots with a second round of 6-over-par 78 that put her in a tie for 57th at 163. She had a pair of birdies in her round.

Brenna Ozel, competed as an individual, shot a second-round of 6-over-par 78 and finished in a tie for 29th at 155 and Sarah Amaya, also competing as an individual, had a pair of birdies during her round of 82 and finished in a tie for 67th at 166.

Cal State LA led the tournament in birdies with 21 and moved up to fifth in pars with 99. Colorado Christian led the field with 112 pars, eight more than any other team.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sept. 30 at the WT Regional Preview in Amarillo, Texas.
