Golden Eagles Settle For Scoreless Tie With Falcons

SEATTLE, WASH. -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team certainly had its chances to win Saturday, but instead settled for a 0-0 tie with Seattle Pacific at Interbay Soccer Stadium.

The No. 3 Golden Eagles put forth some relentless pressure throughout Saturday's game, especially in the second half, but the Falcons were able to keep the ball out of their own net despite being a player down for the final 33 minutes of the game.

Seattle Pacific goalkeeper Pierluca Carnovale came up with some sensational saves in the second half, including a stop on a penalty kick attempt by Cal State LA's Luke Varav with nine minutes remaining. Varav also had a good bid off a free kick about 15 minutes earlier, but Carnovale not only saved that, but also rebound bid by Ivan Farias-Martinez. It was the third straight game that saw the Golden Eagles earn a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes of a scoreless game.

Cal State LA (2-0-1) stretched its unbeaten streak to 17 games dating back to last season with the tie.

Cal State LA had a 22-9 advantage in shots, including a 15-2 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-0 advantage in the second half.

Diego Bravo also had a strong game in goal for the Golden Eagles and made a pair of quality stops to record his third shutout in three games.

Tommaso Belli had a match-high five shots for the Golden Eagles, while Matteo Costa had four shots, including a great chance in the 87th minute that was saved by Carnovale. Varav also had four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Candelario and Oscar Cardenas had two each.

Cal State LA also had an apparent goal waved off due to an offside call in the 88th minute.

Cal State LA, after going 2-0-1 in its first three games of the season, all on the road, will play its home opener next Friday, Sept. 20, against Colorado School of Mines at 7 p.m.
