LOS ANGELES -- After a few anxious moments in the first half, Cal State LA's men's soccer team found its footing and roared back for a big win in its 2024 home opener.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the nation, spotted Colorado School of Mines an early goal and then stormed back for a 4-1 victory Friday night at University Stadium. Cal State LA (3-0-1) got the equalizer before halftime and then scored all three goals of the second half for the win.
The Golden Eagles had four different goal scorers -
Felix Alverdale,
Andrew Portis,
Luke Varav and
Oscar Warne - and a pair of beautiful assists from Tomasso Belli to key the victory.
Cal State LA stretched its unbeaten streak to 17 games dating back to last season.
Diego Bravo had a season-high four saves for the Golden Eagles, who surrendered their first goal of the season after opening the year with three straight shutouts.
Cal State LA had a 12-11 advantage in shots and both teams had nine corner kicks in a game that had a lot of end-to-end action from start to finish.
The Orediggers (1-4) were coming off a home win over then-No. 9 Point Loma and they got off to a strong start against the Golden Eagles on Friday. Ayman Bushara gave his team the lead in the 16th minute when he finished nicely to the far post on a perfect centering pass from John Burnett.Â
The Orediggers were able to maintain that edge until late in the half when Alverdale struck for his first goal of the season.
Braeden Pryor was able to direct the ball to Alverdale, who managed to get off a shot through a crowd that went off goalkeeper Caden Allaire's diving attempt that went inside the far post in the 42nd minute.
Cal State LA took the lead in the 55th minute when
Andrew Portis convered a penalty kick for his first goal of the season. Pryor was fouled inside the box, giving the Golden Eagles the opportunity.
Cal State LA extended the lead to 3-1 in the 76th minute with a pair of spectacular passes. The first came from
Kento Tani, who lofted a long pass that hit a streaking Belli in stride down the right side. Belli carried the ball all the way into the box and sent a nifty pass to Varav, who quickly shot from point-blank range for his first goal of the season.
Then, four minutes later, Belli was at it again, setting up Warne for his first goal of the season with another deft pass in the box.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a 2 p.m. home game against MSU Denver.
