ELLENSBURG, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team recorded a sweep over Western Washington on Friday in the second day of competition at the Central Washington Invitational.
The match between teams that have claimed the last three West Region championships - Cal State LA in 2023 and 2022 and Western Washington in 2021 - went to the defending national champions by scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-15 in Nicholson Arena.
No. 11 Cal State LA (4-2) fell to Western Washington in the title match in 2021 and has won two regional titles - and a national title - and posted a pair of three-set wins over the Vikings since then.
Emily Elliott led the way once again, delivering a match-high 17 kills and adding four aces, three blocks and four digs. She hit at a .361 percentage, which led all hitters in the match.
Haley Roundtree had five kills and five blocks and
Zuhal Cetin had five kills and a team-high 11 digs.
Delaney Speer led Western Washington (1-4) with seven kills.
Arielle Chandler had 22 set assists for Cal State LA, while
Sophia Bernard had a pair of kills and
Havannah Vogel had three blocks.
Western Washington had a 32-30 advantage in kills, but Cal State LA outhit the Vikings, .228-.112, and had a 9-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had nine service aces and eight errors, while the Vikings had two aces and 14 errors.
Cal State LA, after a tough five-set win over Simon Fraser on Thursday, got off to a good start on Friday against the Vikings and broke open the first set with a 13-4 run that turned a 12-11 lead into a 25-15 set win. Cal State LA led 20-15 and then got the final five points of the frame on kills by Roundtree and Elliott, back-to-back aces by
Rebecca Topete and a block by Vogel and Chandler.
The second set was much tighter and the Golden Eagles faced a set point at 24-23 before a service error and two kills from Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the set, 26-24.
Cal State LA took a 12-4 lead in the third set after an attack error, a kill by Elliott and a block by
Madison Clark and Cetin and never looked back. The Golden Eagles scored five straight points behind the serve of
Jameson Sanders and the Golden Eagles won the final four points to close out the match.
Brooke Paige served for the final three points.
Cal State LA will conclude play in the tournament with a match against host Central Washington on Saturday at 4 p.m.
