ELLENSBURG, WASH. -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team pulled out another thrilling victory Saturday to complete play with an undefeated record at the Central Washington Invitational.
The Golden Eagles got another spectacular match from tournament Most Valuable Player
Emily Elliott and edged host Central Washington, 27-25, 26-24, 15-25, 18-25, 15-12 in Nicholson Arena. Cal State LA (5-2), the defending national champions, beat Simon Fraser, Western Washington and Central Washington in the tournament.
Elliott led the way once again with a match-high 29 kills, three aces, three blocks and 15 digs for another double-double. She had 33.5 points in the match.
In the three matches, Elliott had 73 kills and 11 service aces in 13 sets.
Haley Roundtree had seven kills and four blocks and
Tehya Chadwick had six kills.
Ellie Marble had 14 kills and 13 digs for Central Washington (2-4), while Emma Daoud-Hebert had 12 kills, three aces and three blocks.
Arielle Chandler had 48 set assists and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles put away the first set after a kill by Elliott and a block by Roundtree broke a 25-25 tie.
Cal State LA then took a 2-0 lead with a close win in the second set. The Golden Eagles trailed 23-19 before kills by Elliott and Chadwick, and two straight aces by
Sophia Bernard tied it up. Cal State LA then trailed 24-23 before a kill by Elliott, a block by Chadwick and an attack error ended the set.
After dropping the next two sets to send the match to a deciding fifth set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead with a 5-0 run sparked by three aces and a kill by Elliott. After the Wildcats closed to within 7-5, a kill by Elliott and a block by
Havannah Vogel and Chandler made it 9-5. Cal State LA took a 13-9 lead after back-to-back kills by Elliott and got to match point at 14-10 after a kill by
Samarah DaCoud. Central Washington fought off two match points before another kill by Elliott ended the match.
Elliott and Roundtree both earned All-Tournament honors.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Sonoma State.
