BROOMFIELD, COLO. -- Cal State LA's women's golf team finished in a tie for second after another solid round on Tuesday at the Swan Memorial Tournament hosted by Colorado Christian.
The Golden Eagles shared the lead with Colorado State Pueblo after the opening round, but the ThunderWolves, the back-to-back Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions, shot the round of the day on Tuesday, a 1-under-par 287 to claim the championship with a two-day total of 582 at the Broadlands Golf Course.
Cal State LA, after an opening-round of 295, came back with a round of 296 for a total of 591, which tied the Golden Eagles with Angelo State for second place in the 12-team tournament.
Colorado Christian was a distant fourth with a total of 612.
Cal State LA and Colorado State Pueblo met last in the 2023 NCAA West Regional with the ThunderWolves finishing sixth in the region and the Golden Eagles taking eighth.
Morgan Sjoerdsma had a strong opening tournament for the Golden Eagles, finishing in a tie for third with a two-round total of 1-over-par 145 after a round of 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. Sjoerdsma was just four shots off the lead and recorded her best finish since winning the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout in February.Â
It was the sixth top-three finish and the 13th top-five finish of Sjoerdsma's brilliant Cal State LA career.
She had two birdies and three bogeys on her Tuesday round.
Joshlyn Ayala and
Lehapi Veikune earned top-10 finishes after placing in a tie for eighth with a two-day total of 148. Ayala shot a second consecutive round of 74, while Veikune had the team's best round of the day on Tuesday with an even-par 72.Â
Ayala, after a slow start to Tuesday's round, was 1-under-par over her final 13 holes, with one birdie and 12 pars, while Veikune had three birdies on her round, giving her a team-high seven for the tournament.
It was the third top-10 finish of Ayala's Cal State LA career and the 148 is just one shot above her career best with the Golden Eagles.
Sarah Amaya, who matched the best round of her career on Monday with a 73, shot a second round of 78 and finished in a tie for 16th with a total of 151. The 151 is a new career low for Amaya, whose previous best was a 152 at the HPU Sharks Shootout last October on a par-70 course. She also shot a 153 over two days on a par-72 course at the Tim Tierney Shootout. Amaya finished her round on Tuesday with birdies on two of her last three holes.
Daniela Andrade finished 24th after a second round of 77 a two-day total of 153. She recorded one birdie during her round on Tuesday.
The team finish was the fourth consecutive top-three finish in fall events for the Golden Eagles, who had two third-place finishes and a second-place finish in their three fall events in 2023-24.Â
Cal State LA will return to action at the RJGA Women's Shootout at Estrella next Monday in Goodyear, Ariz.
