Golden Eagles Get A Wild Doubleheader Split

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's baseball team split a wild doubleheader against San Francisco State on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take the opener, 17-14, and then surrendered seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to drop the nightcap, 10-5, in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Maloney Field. Cal State LA (21-24, 15-20 CCAA) is tied for seventh in the CCAA with Sonoma State, one-half game behind sixth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills. San Francisco State (25-20, 19-16 CCAA) moved into fourth place.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament and six teams are within 2 1/2 games of each other for sixth place with five games remaining.

The Golden Eagles had a season-high 23 hits in the opener to prevail in the opener. The game featured grand slam home runs by each teams in the first two innings and the teams combined for 31 runs and 39 hits.

Matthew Piotrowski was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI, while Elijah Jackson, Javy Espinoza and Isaiah Marquez had three hits each. Will Schwab, Kai Penuelas, Ethan Gonzalez and Atticus Gonzalez had two hits each.

Piotrowski's grand slam in the second inning countered a first-inning grand slam by San Francisco State's Daniel Santos and gave the Golden Eagles a 6-4 lead. A three-run home run by Penuelas, his second homer in two days, extended the lead to 12-5 in the fourth and a run-scoring double by Marquez put the Golden Eagles ahead, 14-10, in the seventh.

San Francisco State, though, tied it with four runs in the eighth, setting the stage for a clutch Golden Eagle rally in the ninth. Art Ruiz delivered a two-run ground-rule double to break the tie and Ethan Gonzalez drove in another run to make it 17-14.

Brent Jacques pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season. Joel Martinez picked up the victory after pitching two innings. Holden Hungerford got the start and went four innings.

In the nightcap, Piotrowski had a run-scoring double in the first inning, Ruiz had a run-scoring double in the second and Jackson followed with a two-run double to give Cal State LA a 4-1 lead and an infield single by Marquez gave the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead in the fifth.

San Francisco State scored seven times in the sixth, including a three-run home run from Justin Johnson to cap the inning.

Eric Navarrete started for the Golden Eagles and went 5 1/3 innings.

Jackson was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Golden Eagles.

The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
