SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's baseball team showed off its resiliency once again on Sunday and picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in the finale of a four-game series at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles rallied impressively from deficits of 5-2 and 8-5 and beat the Gators, 12-10, at Maloney Field to earn a split of the series. Cal State LA (22-24, 16-20 CCAA) needed the win to stay in a tie for sixth place in the conference, while San Francisco State (25-21, 19-17 CCAA) stayed in fourth place.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament. Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay have already clinched spots.
Cal State LA is tied with Sonoma State for sixth place with four games remaining, while Cal State Dominguez Hills is just one-half game back.
Cal State LA is seeking its first trip to the CCAA Tournament since 2018.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 5-2 after one inning, but scored once in the third and twice in the fifth to tie it. After San Francisco State scored three times in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead, the Golden Eagles struck back for five runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and added two more in the ninth on a two-run home run by
Kai Penuelas to extend its margin of victory.
Anthony Diaz tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season, while
Brent Jacques pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the second time in three days. He entered the game with two on and nobody out and got the final out with the bases loaded. Cal State LA used seven pitchers in the game to pick up the victory.
Cal State LA had 15 hits in the game. The top of the order was on fire once again with
Elijah Jackson,
Javy Espinoza and
Matthew Piotrowski going 8-for-15. Behind them,
Isaiah Marquez,
Malik Clayton and Penuelas scored two runs each and No. 8 hitter
Ethan Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with two RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the seventh that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Espinoza was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Piotrowski was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, Clayton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Jackson was 2-for-5 with one run scored and Penuelas was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Clayton reached on a two-base error in the first inning to score Piotrowski and Marquez and give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead, but San Francisco State scored five times in the bottom of the first to grab a 5-2 lead.
Marquez drove in a run with fielder's choice in the third to make it 5-3 and Piotrowski's RBI single in the fifth and a wild pitch that scored Espinoza tied it in the fifth.
After San Francisco State scored three times in the sixth to regain the lead, the Golden Eagles rebounded with five runs in the seventh. A two-run single by Clayton that scored Espinoza and Piotrowski made it 8-7 and a sacrifice fly by
Art Ruiz that scored Marquez tied it.
Gonzalez then delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to left to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Penuelas then followed a single by Clayton with a two-run home run to make it 12-8.
Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a four-game series at home against Stanislaus State beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m.
