LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team fell behind early and never did recover in a series-ending loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles trailed 4-0 after one inning and 9-2 after four innings and fell to the Broncos, 13-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (20-22, 14-18 CCAA) evened the series after taking the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, but Cal Poly Pomona (24-17, 20-12 CCAA) won the final two games to take the series, 3-1.
The loss was a damaging one for the Golden Eagles, who are now 1 1/2 games back of sixth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills with eight games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Elijah Jackson,
Javy Espinoza and
Malik Clayton all hit solo home runs for the Golden Eagles, but that was essentially all of their offense.
Cal Poly Pomona also hit three home runs, including one to start the game by Johnny Pappas, who went 3-for-6 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot. Julian Angulo and Anthony Gibbons also homered for the Broncos, accounting for four runs. Marco Malerra was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead a 14-hit Cal Poly Pomona attack.
Clayton had two of Cal State LA's seven hits.
Miles Halligan was the first of seven Cal State LA pitchers.
Moises Escobedo pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while
Michael Gill got the final out of the seventh inning and
Dorsey Chatham and
Brent Jacques each pitched scoreless innings.
Even Adolphus allowed six hits and three runs to pick up the win for Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game CCAA series at San Francisco State.
