ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team got a big-time rally in the opener and a well-pitched loss in the nightcap to split a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Sonoma State.
The four-game series was adjusted due to expected rain and the Golden Eagles and Seawolves split the first two games on Friday. Cal State LA (18-18, 12-14) got a tie-breaking two-run triple from
Kai Penuelas to highlight a six-run seventh-inning rally in an 8-7 victory in the opener, but Sonoma State (17-19, 11-15 CCAA) got a nine-inning combined shutout from a pair of pitchers to take a 3-0 decision in the nightcap.
Cal State LA remains in sixth place in the conference, still one-half game ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills, which split a doubleheader at Cal State East Bay on Friday. Sonoma State is just one game back.
The top six teams qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing, 6-2, after six innings in the opener before taking full advantage of a pair of Sonoma State errors to score six times.
Javy Espinoza delivered a two-run single to make it 6-4 and run-scoring singles by
Malik Clayton and
Drew Porter tied it at 6-6. Penuelas then broke the tie with a two-run triple down the right-field line. Four of the six runs in the inning came with two outs.
Joel Martinez pitched the final three innings for the Golden Eagles to pick up his fifth save of the season. He allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-7, but blanked the Seawolves over the final two innings to preserve the victory.
Michael Gill got the win after allowing two runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Holden Hungerford got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up five hits and three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Matthew Piotrowski, Clayton and Porter had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, who had 10 hits in the opener.
Cal State LA was unable to record a sweep after the Seawolves took the nightcap, 3-0. Ethan Glassman and Nick Kamages combined to limit the Golden Eagles to just six hits in a nine-inning shutout.
Eric Navarrete had a tremendous start for the Golden Eagles, tossing six shutout innings. He allowed six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.Â
Elijah Jackson had a pair of hits, including a double, for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Marquez also had a pair of hits.
Cal State LA is scheduled to resume the series with a single game on Saturday at 3 p.m., weather permitting.
