ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA.'s baseball team got a second straight gem from
Owen Hunt and split its second California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader in three days at Sonoma State.
Hunt tossed eight shutout innings to lead the Golden Eagles to a 5-2 win in the opener and a late rally fell short in a tough 7-6 loss in the nightcap on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond. Cal State LA (19-19, 13-15 CCAA) maintains its spot in sixth place in the conference, one-half game ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills and one game clear of Sonoma State (18-20, 12-16 CCAA).The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Hunt, who was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after tossing a seven-inning complete-game shutout against Cal State East Bay last Saturday, was at it again on Sunday. This time, he blanked the Seawolves over eight outstanding innings to pick up his team-best fifth victory of the season. He allowed only three hits while walking two and striking out six.
Hunt has allowed only six hits and no runs over his last 15 innings with five walks and 14 strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles backed him with five runs in the first three innings.
Kadyn Victorian got it started with a two-run double in the second inning and he scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Isaiah Marquez singled in a run in the third inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Malik Clayton to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Hunt left after eight innings and
Anthony Lopez pitched the ninth inning to complete the win.
Both teams finished with only four hits each.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 3-0 after one inning and 5-2 after four innings in the nightcap, but rallied to tie the game at 5-5 before Sonoma State got a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the seven-inning win.
Javy Espinoza hit a two-run home run in the top of third to slice the deficit to 3-2 and the Golden Eagles tied it with three runs in the top of the fifth. Espinoza doubled in a run to make it 5-3, a double-play groundout by Clayton made it 5-4 and a run-scoring double by
Drew Porter tied it.
The Seawolves, though, rebounded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-5 lead.
Matthew Piotrowski made it 7-6 when he reached on an error to score
Elijah Jackson and the Golden Eagles had a pair of runners reach base in the seventh with two outs before the game ended on a lineout.
Miles Halligan got the start and allowed five hits and five runs over four innings.
Joel Martinez gave up a pair of runs in the fifth and Dorsey Chatman tossed a scoreless sixth inning with a strikeout.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday at home in the opener of a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona at Reeder Field.
