SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's baseball team tried for some late-game heroics against conference-leading Cal State Monterey Bay, but came up short in its comeback bid.
The Golden Eagles fell into a big hole after a 10-run fourth-inning for the Otters and couldn't make it all the way back in an eventual 11-5 loss in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Friday at the Otters Sports Complex. Cal State LA (14-15, 8-11 CCAA) scored three times in the seventh and twice in the ninth before Cal State Monterey Bay (20-11, 16-7 CCAA) recorded the final out.
Matthew Piotrowski went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while
Elijah Jackson was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Isaiah Marquez also had a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles.
Owen Hunt got the start for the Golden Eagles and tossed three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. He only allowed four hits, but walked seven and hit a batter before giving way to
Moises Escobedo.
Michael Gill allowed two hits and no runs while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings,
Anthony Lopez allowed two hits and one run over two innings and
Brandon Gutierrez pitched a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout.
Cal State LA got on the board with three runs in the seventh.
Will Schwab singled up the middle to start the inning and took third on a groundout by Anthony Angel Jr. After
Ethan Gonzalez walked, Jackson,
Javy Espinoza and Piotrowski all delivered two-out RBI singles.
Piotrowski added a two-run single in the ninth to drive in
Cesar Chavez and Jackson.
Cal State LA will conclude the series at Cal State Monterey Bay with a single game on Saturday.
