LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its perfect home record come to an end Saturday.
And, making matters even worse, the Golden Eagles lost not once, but twice in a doubleheader to Chico State in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. After taking the series opener on Friday, 17-9, to run their home record to 8-0, the Golden Eagles dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, 14-0 and 15-3, to the Wildcats. Cal State LA (13-12, 7-8 CCAA) slipped from fourth to sixth in the CCAA, while Chico State (15-9, 10-9 CCAA) jumped from sixth to fourth.
The start of the doubleheader was pushed back two hours due to overnight and mid-morning rains and the Golden Eagles never could get untracked against a relentless Chico State offense and a stingy group of pitchers who blanked Cal State LA for the first 13 innings of the doubleheader.
Cal State LA fell behind 5-0 before its first at bat of the day and never recovered.
Holden Hungerford settled things down and allowed only four hits and one earned run over 3 2/3 innings, but Cal State LA was unable to break through offensively against Chico State pitchers Kevin Lyons and Nolan Meredith. Lyons scattered eight hits over seven scoreless innings, while Meredith finished up with just one hit allowed over the final two innings.Â
Troy Kent and Daniel Vierra hit home runs for the Wildcats, who collected 16 hits in the opener.
Javy Espinoza and
Matthew Piotrowski had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while
Andrew Duran pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Chico State then got two runs in the top of the first inning and six more in the third to break open the nightcap. The Wildcats got a pair of home runs from Kent, giving him three on the day, another from Vierra and one from Carson Stevens.Â
Elijah Jackson went 4-for-4 for the Golden Eagles, while
Cesar Chavez had a double and a pair of runs batted in.
Chico State got a strong start from Ethan Lay, who tossed four scoreless innings and left with two outs in the fifth.Â
The Golden Eagles scored their first run of the day in the fifth inning when Jackson doubled in
Alfonso Jalil, who had reached base with a one-out double.
Cal State LA added two more in the sixth on a double from Chavez that drove in Anthony Angel Jr. and
Matthew Piotrowski. Piotrowski had walked to lead off the inning and Angel Jr. walked.
Malik Clayton followed Chavez's double with a double off the right-field wall, but Chavez waited to make sure the ball wasn't caught and only reached third base and the Wildcats were able to escape the inning without any further damage.
Cal State LA and Chico State will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday beginning at noon.
