LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team did its best to overcome a late deficit to Chico State, but a last-ditch effort in the ninth inning came up just short.
The Golden Eagles scored five times in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wildcats were able to hold on for an 11-8 victory in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (13-13, 7-9 CCAA) took the opener of the series with a 17-9 victory on Friday, but Chico State (16-9, 11-9 CCAA) won the final three games to claim the series.
Isaiah Marquez hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season for the Golden Eagles as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate and
Elijah Jackson went 2-for-5 with two runs and two runs batted in.
Javy Espinoza,
Malik Clayton and
Ethan Gonzalez had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
Daniel Vierra hit a pair of home runs for Chico State, while Thade Miller had four hits and three runs scored.
Miles Halligan got the start for the Golden Eagles and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while walking three and striking out five. After the Wildcats took a 10-3 lead with a four-run seventh,
Eric Navarrete came on to settle things down and allowed just one hit and a run over 1 2/3 innings.
Joel Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth to give the Golden Eagles a chance for their big comeback attempt.
Vierra hit the first of his two home runs to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the first before
Drew Emmons singled in Jackson to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.
Chico State added a run in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead, but Marquez lofted his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot. to make it 6-3.
The Wildcats added four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to take an 11-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Golden Eagles got the first two batters aboard via errors and a groundout by
Art Ruiz scored Emmons to make it 11-4.
Ethan Gonzalez followed with a run-scoring single and Jackson smacked a two-run double down the left-field line and suddenly it was 11-7. Javy Espinosa picked up an infield single and Jackson scored on a throwing error to make it 11-8, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles could get.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay.Â
