FRESNO -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled competitively on Friday in the Golden Eagles' opening match in the Fresno Pods Tournament.
The Golden Eagles dropped a hard-fought doubles point and couldn't turn things around in a 6-1 loss to Academy of Art at the Haak Tennis Complex in Fresno. Cal State LA (1-10) got a singles victory from
Sarah Olmos for its lone point.
Cal State LA was close in all three doubles sets.
Sakura Kurokawa and
Alexandra Hincu fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, to Jessica Plazas and Estelle Najean and
Courtlyn Lam and
Rochelle Suarez fell to Maria Casucci and Paulina Alvarez at No. 3 doubles. 6-4. Cal State LA's No. 1 doubles team of Olmos and
Hideka Takamura trailed Amelija Supulniece and Erica Hellbe, 6-5, when the point was clinched.
OImos picked up a tremendous victory over Casucci at No. 2 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 decision. Olmos picked up her second win in the past four matches and she went to a third-set for a third time in those four contests.
The Golden Eagles were without Kurokawa for singles. which moved four players up a spot in the lineup. Takamura fell at No. 1 singles to Supulniece, 6-0, 6-0, Hincu fell at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to Plazas, Suarez fell to Najean, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles,
Lea Rolland fell to Viktoria Leth at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and
Summer Roybal fell to Georgiana Parr, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match against Stanislaus State in Fresno.
