LOS ANGELES -- After making program history by reaching the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons, Cal State LA's women's basketball team is seeking an even bigger achievement on Friday at Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles will be searching for the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history. Cal State LA (17-12) was overjoyed to hear its name called as the No. 8 seed in the West Region on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday and now the Golden Eagles will face tournament host and No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific (28-3) on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Felix Event Center.
In an ironic twist, while the Golden Eagles will be meeting in Azusa at 5 p.m., the Cal State LA's men's basketball team, as the No. 1 seed, will host the No. 8 seed Cougars in Los Angeles on Friday, also at 5 p.m.
It's the first time Cal State LA has had both men's and women's teams reach the NCAA playoffs in the same season and, as it turns out, they will both be playing at the same time against the same school.
The host Cougars have won 24 straight games since Cal State LA handed them a 79-75 defeat on Nov. 21.
The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, come in with confidence, believing they are much better than their 17-12 record would indicate. Cal State LA has lost a staggering nine games by three points or less or in overtime, including their most recent game, an 82-78 overtime heart-breaker to eventual champion Cal State San Marcos in the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament.
Cal State LA is 7-2 over its last nine games with the only losses a one-point defeat to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the regular-season finale and the overtime loss to Cal State San Marcos last week.
Included during that streak were wins over tournament qualifiers Cal State San Marcos and Chico State.
Lily Buggs was named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team for the third straight season after recording a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double in a 78-64 win over host Cal State San Bernardino in a first-round game and putting up 24 points and five rebounds in the overtime loss to Cal State San Marcos.
Nicole Flennaugh had 21 points against Cal State San Marcos and a team-high 18 points against Cal State San Bernardino.
Olivia Hodges had 11 points and eight rebounds against Cal State San Bernardino, while
Alicia Jones had 14 points and seven rebounds against the Coyotes.
Cal State LA will be facing Azusa Pacific for the first time in an NCAA playoff game.
Earlier this season,
Donja Payne broke a tie in the final minute and Buggs had a steal and hit two free throws to seal a 79-75 win at Azusa Pacific on Nov. 21. Flennaugh had a game-high 25 points in that one, while Jones had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The winner of the Cal State LA-Azusa Pacific game will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Montana State Billings vs. Chico State game.
