Golden Eagles Set To Host Cougars In NCAA Tourney

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team, fresh off claiming the first California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title in program history, will now embark on its first NCAA postseason appearance since 2020 with an added twist.

The Golden Eagles will be playing at home.

The No. 1 seed Golden Eagles will host No. 8 seed Azusa Pacific on Friday at 5 p.m. in the third of four quarterfinal NCAA Division II West Regional contests to be held in University Gym. Four games will be contested on Friday in University Gym, beginning with No. 3 Montana State Billings vs. No. 6 Chico State at noon, No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino vs. No. 7 Alaska Anchorage at 2:30 p.m., No. 1 Cal State LA vs. No. 8 Azusa Pacific at 5 p.m. and No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills vs. No. 5 Central Washington at 7:30 p.m.

In an ironic twist, while the Golden Eagles will be hosting the No. 8 Cougars at 5 p.m., the Cal State LA's women's basketball team, as the No. 8 seed, will play the No. 1 seed Cougars in Azusa on Friday, also at 5 p.m.

It's the first time Cal State LA has had both men's and women's teams reach the NCAA playoffs in the same season and, as it turns out, they will both be playing at the same time against the same school.

Cal State LA (24-7) has set a new program single-season wins record this season with one of those victories coming in a hard-fought win at Azusa Pacific in November. In that contest, the Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 43-17, but held off the Cougars thanks to committing only eight turnovers while forcing 22, which led to a 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Both teams enter the NCAA playoffs after winning conference tournament titles. Cal State LA, as the No. 3 seed, beat No. 6 San Francisco State, No. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena to claim the CCAA tournament championship, while Azusa Pacific, as a No. 6 seed, beat No. 3 Hawaii Pacific, No. 2 seed Academy of Art and No. 1 seed and host Point Loma to win the PacWest Conference tournament title. The Cougars (14-16) beat the Sea Lions, 78-66, in the title game.

Cal State LA is 10-2 in its last 12 games with the only two losses, surprisingly, coming at home in mid-February against Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos. Since then, the Golden Eagles are 6-0 including a road win at Chico State, two wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and the championship game win over Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles will be facing the Cougars in an NCAA Tournament game for the first time.

The winners of Friday's game will face the winner of the Cal State Dominguez Hills vs. Central Washington game on Satuday at 7:30 p.m.
