Golden Eagles Fall At Home To UC Irvine

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled with NCAA Division I UC Irvine on Saturday before ultimately falling short.

The Golden Eagles were unable to claim the doubles point and then dropped five of the six singles contests and fell to the Anteaters, 6-1, Saturday at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-6) continues to battle for its first win since a season-opening victory over Westmont.

Sakura Kurokawa picked up the lone point for the Golden Eagles. She won at No. 3 singles when her opponent retired during the second set of a match Kurokawa was leading, 6-3, 2-0.

The other five matches were decided in straight sets. Hideka Takamura, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time, fell to Kayla Meraz, 6-1, 6-0, Sarah Olmos fell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, Alexandra Hincu fell at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Rochelle Suarez fell at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and Summer Roybal fell at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Olmos and Takamura played well at No. 1 doubles and trailed 3-4 when the point was clinched. Hincu and Kurokawa fell to Meraz and Jenna Schlatter, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles and Courtlyn Lam and Suarez fell at No. 3 doubles to Perez and Gidwell.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday, March 5, at Westcliff.
