Golden Eagles Get To 20 With Road Win At Chico

CHICO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team completed a big road week with an impressive win at Chico State on Saturday night.

After posting a last-second win on Thursday at Cal Poly Humboldt, the Golden Eagles had a magnificent second half to beat Chico State, 82-77, in a pivotal California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (20-7, 15-6 CCAA) reached 20 wins for the first time since 1959 and took over sole possession of third place in the conference with one regular-season game remaining.

The Golden Eagles still have a shot at securing second place and a first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament with a win on Thursday at home against first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and a Cal State San Bernardino loss at Cal Poly Pomona. Under that scenario, the Golden Eagles would move into a tie for second and win the tiebreaker with Cal State San Bernardino.

Eche Okeke had 25 points to lead the Golden Eagles, just one point off his season high that he set on Thursday in the win at Cal Poly Humboldt. He was 8-of-12 from the floor, 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and also had eight rebounds. Shane Bell had 13 points, two rebounds and two assists and Corey Cofield had 10 points and nine rebounds and hit two free throws in the waning seconds to wrap up the win.

Joshua Hamilton had 14 points for Chico State (19-7, 14-7 CCAA), while Jojo Murphy had 13 points.

Jaden Lazo and Kris Krause had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while Deuce Walker had seven points. Eight Golden Eagles scored at least five points in the victory.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (29-of-58) and was 6-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were especially efficient in the second half, shooting 57 percent (17-of-30). Cal State LA was 18-off-27 from the free-throw line. Chico State shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) and was 11-off-26 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 22-of-23 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles rebounded well and had a 36-27 edge. Cal State LA committed only eight turnovers to 11 for the Wildcats.

Cal State LA took a 33-31 lead late in the first half on a 3-pointer by Isaiah Fields, but the Wildcats got a late steal and score to take a 35-33 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles, though, came out in the second half and took a 44-38 lead after a 3-pointer by Walker and a layup by Okeke. Cal State LA trailed by as many as four points, but got a go-ahead 3-pointer by Lazo with 6:48 to go and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles built an eight-point lead, 76-68, with 2:38 left and a jumper by Okeke kept an eight-point lead at 78-70 with 1:22 to go. Chico State got to within three points late, but Cofield rebounded a late miss and hit two free throws to put the game away.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday.
