Golden Eagles Soar Into Playoffs With Win Over Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team will carry some momentum into next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament after closing the regular season with a big win over conference co-champion Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles, playing in front of an electric crowd in University Gym, beat the Toros, 74-67, Thursday night on Senior Night. Cal State LA (21-7, 16-6 CCAA) set a new program record for wins in a season and completed a regular-season sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills (22-6, 17-5 CCAA).

The result had implications for the conference tournament as well. Cal State LA held onto its No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 seed San Francisco State in a first-round game on Thursday. Cal State Dominguez Hills, meanwhile, slipped into a tie for first in the conference with Cal State San Bernardino, which claims the No. 1 seed via tiebreaker. The Toros are now the No. 2 seed and both top seeds earn first-round byes.

Cal State LA won with exceptional balance with five players scoring in double figures. Eche Okeke led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Jaden Lazo had 13 points and Isaiah Fields had 12 points. Lazo and Fields were a combined 7-of-11 from 3-point range with Fields hitting four of his five attempts.

Alex Garcia had 16 points to lead four Toros in double figures. Jakob Alamudun had 14 points and six rebounds, while Jeremy Dent-Smith had 12 points and five assists.

A'Jahni Levias had 10 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Corey Cofield had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 39.1 percent for the game (25-of-64) and was 10-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 39 percent (23-of-59) and was 5-of-21 from 3-point range. The Toros were 16-of-26 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA had a 28-25 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers to 13 for the Toros.

It was a hotly contested game throughout with neither team able to lead by more than seven points. The Golden Eagles trailed by six, 32-26, late in the half, but got a 3-pointer by Levias and a pair of free throws by Cofield to make it 34-31 at halftime.

The Toros grabbed their biggest lead of the game at 45-38, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 14-2 run and took a 48-47 lead on a 3-pointer by Lazo and extended it to 52-47 after a layup by Cofield and a dunk by Okeke. The Toros came back to tie it at 55-55, but Fields hit a go-ahead 3-pointer and Levias followed with one as well to give the Golden Eagles a 61-57 lead.

The Toros again tied it at 65-65 before free throws by Okeke and Levias put the Golden Eagles ahead by four. A free throw by Okeke made it 70-67 with 1:23 to go and strong Cal State LA defense and a pair of free throws by Escobar made it 72-67 with 14 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Okeke with six seconds remaining closed out the win.

Cal State LA honored its two seniors - Eche Okeke and Deuce Walker - in pregame ceremonies.
