ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found itself on the right of a frantic finish Thursday night against Cal Poly Humboldt.
Stinging from a last-second loss to Cal State San Marcos last Saturday, the Golden Eagles got a game-winning layup from
A'Jahni Levias with two seconds left to edge the host Lumberjacks, 81-80, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (19-7, 14-6 CCAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and maintained its share of third place in the conference with Chico State. The Golden Eagles are now two games out of first and one game out of second with two conference games remaining.
The Golden Eagles were staring at the possibility of a third straight one-possession loss after Cal Poly Humboldt took an 80-79 lead on a pair of free throws with six seconds to go. Cal State LA, though, after a timeout, called a brilliant full-court play design that enable
Shane Bell, thanks to a nice screen from
Eche Okeke to catch an inbounds pass on the run and quickly carry it to midcourt. Bell then whipped a beautiful pass to an open Levias, who finished at the rim for the game-winner. Cal Poly Humboldt was unable get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.
Okeke had a season-high 26 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Levias had 21 points and had his second-highest scoring game of the season. Okeke and Levias were a combined 19-of-25 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Brandon Bento-Jackson led five Lumberjacks in double figures with 20 points. All five starters for Cal Poly Humboldt (6-19, 3-17 CCAA) scored 10 points or more. The Lumberjacks had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Bell had nine points and five assists, including the game-winner, for the Golden Eagles.
Kris Krause had eight points and
Isaiah Fields had seven for the Golden Eagles.
Both offenses were sizzling in Thursday's contest. Cal State LA shot 57.9 percent (33-of-57) and was 5-of-12 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles shot 63 percent in the second half (17-of-27). Cal Poly Humboldt shot 58.3 percent (28-of-48), including 68 percent in the first half. The 'Jacks were 12-of-22 from 3-point range and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 22-20, but committed 15 turnovers to 22 for the 'Jacks.
Cal State LA led by as many as nine points in the first half, 29-22, after a dunk by Bell, but the 'Jacks surged ahead and took a 49-43 lead at halftime.Â
The Golden Eagles trailed by five points, 65-60, with 11 minutes to go, but layups by Okeke and Fields, a 3-pointer by Fields, a steal and layup by
Corey Cofield and a steal by Okeke and layup by Cofield sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles 71-65 lead with seven minutes left.
A layup by Okeke broke a 75-75 tie with three minutes left and a jumper by Okeke gave the Golden Eagles a 79-76 lead with one minute remaining. A pair of turnovers led to a basket and two free throws that put the 'Jacks ahead, 80-79, with six seconds left, setting the stage for the clutch finish by the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Chico State.
