Golden Eagles Fall Short At Home Against Dominican

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had an entertaining Sunday match against Dominican, but the Golden Eagles were unable to pick up a win.

The Golden Eagles got a singles win from Sakura Kurokawa, but that was it in a 6-1 loss to the Penguins at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-4) dropped a highly competitive doubles point to Dominican (3-0) and then could only pick up the one singles win from Kurokawa.

Courtlyn Lam and Rochelle Suarez played well at No. 3 doubles and recorded a 6-0 win over Zoe Coggins and Maria Gavrilov, but Dominican took the other two contests to take the point. Cal State LA's Sarah Olmos and Kurokawa fell to Audrey Rafols and Gina Dudley at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, while the No. 2 doubles contest was the match of the day with Cal State LA's Hideka Takamura and Alexandra Hincu falling to Carolina Guerrero and Deepa Varnaraja in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).

Kurokawa picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Coggins at No. 3 singles, but that was the Golden Eagles' lone point. Olmos fell at No. 1 singles to Rafols, 6-2, 6-1; Takamura fell to Dudley at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Hincu fell in the tightest singles contest of the day at No. 4 singles with Gavrilov prevailing, 4-6, 6-3, (10-4), Suarez fell to Varnaraja at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2 and Lea Rolland fell to Astrid Craig, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
