Golden Eagles Unable To Finish What They Started

CARSON -- Cal State LA''s women's basketball team got the start it wanted Saturday in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the finish left a lot to be desired.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven points while jumping out to an 18-17 lead after one quarter, but managed only 23 points over the final three periods in a disappointing 68-41 loss in the Torodome. Cal State LA (7-2, 2-2 CCAA) trailed 32-26 at halftime and was outscored 36-15 in the second half.

Unbeaten Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-0, 4-0 CCAA) has handed Cal State LA both its losses so far this season.

Amaya Fuentes scored 11 points for the Golden Eagles, but was the only player to reach double figures. Ronyae Jackson had eight points and five rebounds and Lily Buggs had seven points.

Nala Williams had a game-high 18 points and eight steals for the Toros, while Hosanna Walker had 11 points.

Olivia Hodges had a team-high eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Sofia Fidelus had a team-high four assists.

Cal State LA shot just 23.7 percent for the game (14-of-59) and was just 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) and was 11-of-26 from 3-point range. The Toros were 5-of-10 from the free-throw line.

A layup by Hodges gave the Golden Eagles a 16-9 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Toros closed the quarter with an 8-2 run to slice the margin to one point. After the Toros scored the opening basket of the second quarter to take the lead at 19-18, a Buggs free throw tied it at 19-19. Cal State Dominguez Hills then hit a go-ahead 3-pointer and never trailed again.

The Golden Eagles trailed by just six points at halftime, 32-26, but were outscored 26-8 in a rough third quarter.

Cal State LA will now enjoy the holidays and return to competition on Thursday, Jan. 2, at Cal State San Bernardino.
