SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a rough afternoon Saturday at Cal State San Marcos.
The No. 24 Golden Eagles started slowly and never could get untracked in a 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 loss to the Cougars in a California Collegiate Athletic Association in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (14-9, 9-7 CCAA) slips to fifth place in the conference with two conference matches remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Zuhal Cetin had a team-high 11 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had eight kills and
Haley Roundtree had six kills and four blocks.
Matalasi Danielson had six kills.
Jessica Thomas had a match-high 12 kills to lead Cal State San Marcos (8-15, 6-10 CCAA).
Arielle Chandler had 19 set assists, while
Matalasi Danielson had six kills and
Jameson Sanders had a team-high 16 digs.
Cal State LA hit at a .092 percentage and had 38 kills with 27 attack errors. Cal State San Marcos had 42 kills and hit at a .324 clip with only eight attack errors. Cal State San Marcos also had a 7-4 edge in blocks. Both teams had two service aces, but the Golden Eagles had four errors, while the Cougars had nine.
Cal State LA rallied from a 16-13 deficit in the opening set after a kill by Danielson, two kills by Cetin, a kill by Roundtree and a kill by Cetin ave the Golden Eagles an 18-16 lead. The Cougars, though, scored the next two points to tie it and, after a 22-22 tie, scored two straight points again to get to set point. A kill by Elliott saved the first set point, but the Cougars cashed in their second on a service error to take the set.
The Golden Eagles fell into an 18-11 hole in the second set and couldn't recover and, after building a 5-2 lead in the third set, the Golden Eagles fell behind 17-13 and 21-14 in the third and were swept.
Cal State LA will play its final two regular-season games at home, beginning with a match on Thursday night against Cal Poly Humboldt at 5 p.m.
